How to try on frames and glasses at home

You can still try on glasses at home. There are two ways to do it.

Four frames on one face, side by side. This is the comparison a home try-on box gives you, without the post.

Home try-on programs that still exist

Fewer programs run today than a few years ago. We checked the list below on 9 October 2026.

Terms change often. Check the store's own site before you order.

How to judge frames properly at home

A quick look in the mirror is not enough. Try these steps.

  1. Use a mirror at arm's length, not close up.
  2. Take a photo from the front and the side.
  3. Wear each pair for a few minutes, not a glance.
  4. Check them in daylight near a window.
  5. Compare pairs side by side if you can.

The fit points that actually matter

Home try-on vs virtual try-on

FactorHome try-on (physical)Virtual try-on
Frame rangeLimited to one retailer's selectionAlmost any frame you can link, photograph or find on video
SpeedDays to arrive, days to returnMinutes, from a photo or scan you already have
What you judgeThe real, physical object, weight includedA rendered image, not the object itself
CostFree to a paid deposit, depending on the retailerOften free to preview; a full render is usually a small paid credit
Prescription lensesUsually demo lenses only during the trialCan show your prescription in the render

Neither option fully replaces the other. A frame in your hand shows you the real weight. A render shows you a frame from any store, in minutes.

Which should you pick?

The virtual option works with any frame, any store

No home try-on range for the frame you want? Skip the wait with a virtual try-on.

SpecFit scans your face once on iPhone. Then it renders the frame on your own photo.

A fit check is free. Paste a link to see the size match.

Do this before you spend a credit on a full render.

Questions

Can I try on glasses at home for free?

Yes, with some stores. Liingo (US) and Glasses Direct (UK) still ship frames free, as of October 2026. Others charge a deposit, or make you buy first.

Does Warby Parker still do home try-on?

No. Its five-frame, five-day mail program ended at the end of 2025. It now points shoppers to a virtual try-on and a style quiz instead.

How long do home try-on frames take to arrive?

It varies by store. Most quote a few days for delivery. You get about a week before you mail the frames back.

What's the difference between home try-on and virtual try-on?

Home try-on ships real frames, but from one store, and takes days. Virtual try-on renders almost any frame on your photo, in minutes.
